Shizukanaru Don: Yakuza Side Story / The Quiet Don / 静かなるドン OVA (1991) [VHS AVC FLAC]

Image
Ripped and encoded by WOWmd from his own VHS tape Translated by Perevodildo Edited by Paul Geromini and darkcart The circumstances force the main character, the soft-spoken Kondo, into the role of a yakuza syndicate boss. Will he succeed to conquer his cute co-worker’s heart 150 chapters later? Read the original manga to find out. Or not. There was one TL note I wanted to add, but I forgot, and now I can’t remember what it was. It’s incredible to me that this manga, extremely influential in Japan, received only one anime adaptation, and even that is very rare, I’m not even sure it made it to LD. The source manga was coming out for 25 years straight and then returned with a sequel which is still ongoing! It was also officially licensed in Taiwan. I struggle to understand the reasons for its success. The premise and the designs do look interesting, but after reading through the first volume for the purposes of this translation, I really can’t call it something I’d read in my free time, e...

Haikara-san ga Tooru - 01 (project restart)

Image
Well, folks. A lot has happened since the last release of this show… Where do I start? First off, we had a bit of a revolving door situation with editors. For this episode, the number of those is the imposing four! The show now also has a proper TLC. Add this and that, and 95% of the lines are entirely new now. But at least, now you know the project is not dead,  just on life support . Still, we’re restarting it from the first episode. This is our new tag and staff roster, probably just one TougeWolf short of being an actual Inka project lol. Ganbarist! Shun - 01

Yes, rescuing another one from the hardsub hell. This torrent is more of a recruitment ad, since none of our usual suspects wanted to commit to a 30-ep-long obscure show about a sports discipline they never heard of before. I won’t sugarcoat it, either: the show is far from stellar in many ways, but has its own charm and a satisfying conclusion. If you’re interested in contributing in any way, reach out to me via discord or your communications channel of choice. Any help is welcome: Typesetting, Translation Checking, Quality Checking. If there aren’t any volunteers, no big deal—I’ll just release it as is, a month or two later. The video for this episode is not perfect either—for some reason, that’s just the way it was uploaded to whatever streaming service WOWmd snatched it from: 480p, going from bitstarved to woefully interlaced, it’s only advantage over the  previously available RAWs  being the lack of the watermark. Still, from episode 2 on, the video is 576p and with bette...

Magical Taruruuto-kun (1990) Final Batch

Image
Well, folks, it’s here. As the Chinese proverb goes, “The road of a thousand li begins with a single step.” A 90-episode-long show seemed like an incredibly long road, and I never fathomed what faraway expanses of the Earth it might lead me to when I started it after watching just 10 episodes. The possibility that I might quit fansubbing before finishing it was not entirely out of the question. Perhaps I started it as a challenge, to see how far I could push myself. But after witnessing the huge attention it garnered, with an overwhelming influx of fans and supporters, my determination to finish it was renewed. I could no longer quit—at least not if it meant disappointing all the other dedicated staff members, and now I can finally say thank you to everyone who believed in us, supported us, or contributed directly in the course of these 90 episodes and two years, and happy new year! This really does feel like the end of an era. Speaking of which, here are they, the heroes of the nation...

Cumulative post: Princess Army, Garden of Remembrance, Nemurenu Yoru no Chiisana Ohanashi, Ryokunohara Labyrinth, Ushiro no Hyakutaro, Kingdom of Chaos - Born to Kill, Doctor Chichibuyama, Aoki Honoo, Handsome na Kanojo, Malay Oki Kaisen, Naki no Ryuu, OL Kaizou Kouza, Kenritsu Umisora Koukou Yakyuubu-in Yamashita Tarou-kun, Perrine Monogatari, Ichigatsu ni ha Christmas, Natsufuku no Shoujo-tachi, Plastic Little

For those shows that Orphan released in the last few months, I didn't have enough to say about, I didn't deem them worthy of a proper post, or my contribution was limited. Princess army - Wedding Combat: I TLCed and had some fun along the way by mocking the original translators for mistaking Netherlands for Poland.  Houkago no Tinker Bell - TLC Nemurenu Yoru no Chiisana Ohanashi - TL Ryokunohara Labyrinth - TLC  Ushiro no Hyakutaro - TL Kingdom of Chaos - Born to Kill - TLC first 2 episodes, TL last 2 Aoki Honoo - TLC - actually misread collectr's intention, I thought this only needed a QC, but ended up just lazily TLCing it lol Doctor Chichibuyama - TL - actually should've made a separate post, but forgot about it. Translation by me, QC by WOWmd, incredibly fun show. Handsome na Kanojo - TLC - this is actually our own release, the first one for [Blasphemboys], but it was extremely low-effort so I don't have enough to say about it for a separate post.   Garden of Re...

Ishii Hisaichi no Nanda Kanda Gekijou / Ishii Hisaichi's "Oh, whatever" Theater / いしいひさいちのナンダカンダ劇場 / The Fabled Underground People OVA (1989)

Image
Ripped from Amazon & encoded by WOWmd Translated by Perevodildo Quality checked by True Noobow Gamer In the first episode (“Anyway, blame the ceiling!”), two (three) storylines are going at the same time: space explorer / searcher Kenichi is trying to save the Earth from different breeds of Godzillas by looking for a solution in the outer space (Space Travel: Searcher Ken-chan); the goofy race of Underground Men, disturbed by revelry of said Godzillas on the surface, decides that they had enough and declares war on the surface, just to spend the rest of the episode trying to find their way to the surface (Surface Invasion). During the intermissions, which take up most of the screen time, we’re shown a story of goofy Ninjas and Daimyos from the feudal Japan era: “101 Ninja Marches.” It’s also nothing to write home about. Amazingly,  some Japanese blog  calls this episode “a masterpiece of four-panel anime adaptations.” I’d beg to differ. Episode two (Christmas Hades) is mos...

[Blasphemboys] The Land of Anger / Ikari no Daichi / 怒りの大地 [WEB-DL 480p, AVC, AAC] (Gakken Anime)

Image
RAW acquisition, encoding: WOWmd Translation: Perevodildo Editing: Paul Geromini Quality checking: True Noobow Gamer You won’t find this show in any database or anime list website. That’s because it’s a “Gakken Anime” - an educational anime that was only distributed to schools and other government institutions in a limited number of copies. For that reason, the Gakken shows are effectively extinct now - very few were in circulation and barely anything of it was preserved.  Watch me carefully avoid saying “lost media.”  Even this video was miraculously found by WOWmd on the  Science Film Museum site  of all places. “Science Film Museum” is also what the watermark on this video source says. For that same reason, the video/audio quality is complete thrash, and I can almost guarantee you no better source will ever appear. I actually don’t know why I made this sub. Maybe to spite the odds and preserve at least some of Gakken Anime, maybe for old times’ sake. A rash decisi...

"Eiji" /「エイジ」Movie (1990)

Original translation: Random Masters Translation checking: Perevodildo Encoding: WOWmd QC: Eternal_Blizzard, WOWmd Special thanks to unowen for stealing the insert music for us Based on the 21-year-old translation by [Random Masters]. The quality of that varied, but was generally above the average for VHS-era subs. Adding songs was the most painful part. It was  Nineteen  all over again. This one had 13 (!) songs spread across a 50-minute film. Nearly every scene here has some special BGM. WOWmd started the project by buying and domesdaying an LD; a few months later I carved out a free minute, TLCed it, added all the songs and typesetting, translated the theatrical trailer that comes at the end of the LD; Eternal Blizzard answered my call for QCers at GJM, WOWmd offered to QC himself as well. So, this show now has subs by DOMO, by Kingmenu, and by Perevodildo. Truly, the holy trinity of ESL. TL notes: The quotation marks in the title are intentional: the manga’s original title...

Nineteen 19 OVA (1990)

Based on the original translation by Nexus Studio (Kenneth H.) wowmd bought and captured the LD for the show, then retimed the subs Perevodildo translation checked and added the songs So, another LD wowmd captured, and I had the indiscretion of looking into, because I was absolutely sold the moment I saw the screencaps from it. The plan was to just groupwatch it and maybe fish out some typos in the process, but five minutes into I realized the situation was direr than expected, and so I had to sit down and work on it properly for a whole day. I TLCed, added very basic typesetting, and subbed insert songs. The translation was pretty meh, but considering the nature of this OVA, the songs are the actual stumbling block here. What if I told you that the number of lines in this sub  doubled  after I added songs (barely any lyrics for that were online)?  This one fucking song  seems to have never been released outside this OVA at all; I was literally at the point of tearin...

Kaitei Daisensou: Ai no 20,000 Miles

For this project, I was technically a TLC for Gango's existing sub, which archivisth described as "When I started editing, I found that the script had a lot of 3-liners and, even to my untrained ears, sounded off in places."  Now, the thing is... With some crappy projects that I TLC for Orphan, I end up rewriting the script from ground-up. So far, it happened for all but one of them. At any rate, such cases usually lead to me writing garrulous journals of my misadventures, one of which you're holding in your hands right now.  Yes, Marty actually spent a year editing this clusterfuck, so I even have a lengthy description for it.  The funniest part is that Collectr himself ended up not getting involved at all.  • "LOVE UNDER 20,000 LEAGUES" - original TL made me laugh my ass off. But he wasn't actually the first person in the world to assume "20,000 LEAGUES" refers to depth, which would be 116,000km or 1/3 of the way to the Moon.  • I signed up t...

Koume-chan ga Iku!! / Here Comes Koume / 小梅ちゃんが行く!! TV (1999) [DVD]

Image
Raws are from this release .  Subs for episode 1 are by DOMO, translation checked by me and quality checked by WOWmd.  Subs for 2-12 are by loadtup, quality checked and retimed by me and WOWmd.  Both projects were in a pretty bad shape before: DOMO is essentially rebranded ARR (but at least he wasn't the translator himself this time) and loadtup's timings are all over the place, plus he's just chronically allergic to periods and onscreen signs (although I suspect he owes that to the dumb structure of his site), but to be fair his translations are accurate at least. Then again, the MC herself is speaking the thickest brand of Kansai-ben, so I couldn't TLC it myself even if I wanted to. Previously existing subs and raws, quality checked and put together, is all.  Extremely low effort release. It's as though I wanted to watch it myself and decided to give it a symbolic cleanup while I'm on it, plus some primitive typesetting. WOWmd also agreed to look at it later. ...

Nijuushi no Hitomi / Twelve Sets of Eyes TV special (1980) [LD + 16mm film scan] w/ Orphan

Image
This is actually a double release. The main one by [Orphan] can be found here . The one I released under my own tag is 16 mm film scan, captured by Kineko Video and provided by MartyMcFlies.  The subs (retimed by me) are the same as in  [Orphan]  release of the LD version of the show, albeit with simplified typesetting because the image is a lot more jittery and this is meant to be a "side" release, a weird alternative for those few who could actually prefer this over the "main" LD version, because oh boy, this film had seen better days. The video is rife with film aging artifacts, most notably the weird blue flickering. Still, I think it deserves to be released because even with all the artifacts it looks considerably crispier than the LD and comes in genuine 1080p. Video is AVC, audio is PCM. TL notes:  The nickname children give to Ooishi - "Koishi-sensei" - is a parody of her name: Ooishi (大石) means "big stone" while Koishi (小石) means "s...

[Orphan] Michite Kuru Toki no Mukou ni / Across the Surging Times (1991)

Image
I've actually been wanting to do this movie ever since I first learned about it years ago.  When the first ever proper raw for it by Orphan appeared in May this year, I was pleased to discover that I was not alone in that.  The premises and posters are simply fascinating.  While the source book, Paradise by Suzuki Kouji, won a local award in 1991, it's not really quite as great, as its novelty qualities wear out rather soon, unlike the movie's. Still, I've read a good portion of it just to ensure that I don't miss anything while translating.  Nyaa | Collectr's post | DDL | Subs only | AniDB

Rainbow Across the Pacific Ocean / Taiheiyou ni Kakeru Niji / 太平洋にかける虹 OVA (1992)

Image
This one has been in the backlog since December 2023, but now I've finally run out of patience with Ziusudra's QC and Shanghaied someone else into it.  RAWs: Unknown (more on that later)  Translation: Perevodildo  Quality Checking: True Noobow Gamer The video is what we concluded to be an HDTV rebroadcast recording, since there are no traces of a DVD/LD for this show. But even if it was aired in HD, it's safe to say that at least two layers of compression it's been through downscaled it back to 480p. How did it happen? Well, I found it on a certain streaming site. When I asked the uploader for the source, it turned out that he also snatched it from some Japanese guy's YouTube channel. As of December 2023, said channel was already terminated, so the trail goes cold there, and I had to settle for this video from VK. Still, even under two layers of compression, it blows previously available ARR's raws out of the Pacific Ocean. Kudos to Psychomorphosis for preservin...

Ore no Sora / My skies (1992) [joint w/ orphan]

Image
Surprisingly, I did this translation back in June 2022 (!) when I still had the energy and motivation so here's the old school verbose description for your enjoyment:  With a half-done script laying around, I heard the call of my skies when Orphan released a good VHS rip as part of their "Cleaning the attics" event. The fact is almost mind-blowing that I grew up on their releases, and now I play a role in one myself.  Update: this sub was in the works for so long that WOWmd had since then acquired a captured an LD for it. Considering, the eponymous prequel to the source manga is currently being translated by Hokuto no Gun, you'd rather expect them to translate this OVA as well. Yet as it appears, HnG is still far from completing even the prequel manga, so it befell upon me to deliver this one. Because I'm such a big dingus, I only figured I should try looking for the raw manga towards the end of ep 1, so with its acquisition, I had to review the whole episode once...
