"Eiji" /「エイジ」Movie (1990)

Image
Original translation: Random Masters Translation checking: Perevodildo Encoding: WOWmd QC: Eternal_Blizzard, WOWmd Special thanks to unowen for stealing the insert music for us Based on the 21-year-old translation by [Random Masters]. The quality of that varied, but was generally above the average for VHS-era subs. Adding songs was the most painful part. It was  Nineteen  all over again. This one had 13 (!) songs spread across a 50-minute film. Nearly every scene here has some special BGM. WOWmd started the project by buying and domesdaying an LD; a few months later I carved out a free minute, TLCed it, added all the songs and typesetting, translated the theatrical trailer that comes at the end of the LD; Eternal Blizzard answered my call for QCers at GJM, WOWmd offered to QC himself as well. So, this show now has subs by DOMO, by Kingmenu, and by Perevodildo. Truly, the holy trinity of ESL. TL notes: The quotation marks in the title are intentional: the manga’s original title (「エイジ」)

Nineteen 19 OVA (1990)

Based on the original translation by Nexus Studio (Kenneth H.) wowmd bought and captured the LD for the show, then retimed the subs Perevodildo translation checked and added the songs So, another LD wowmd captured, and I had the indiscretion of looking into, because I was absolutely sold the moment I saw the screencaps from it. The plan was to just groupwatch it and maybe fish out some typos in the process, but five minutes into I realized the situation was direr than expected, and so I had to sit down and work on it properly for a whole day. I TLCed, added very basic typesetting, and subbed insert songs. The translation was pretty meh, but considering the nature of this OVA, the songs are the actual stumbling block here. What if I told you that the number of lines in this sub  doubled  after I added songs (barely any lyrics for that were online)?  This one fucking song  seems to have never been released outside this OVA at all; I was literally at the point of tearing my hair out when

Kaitei Daisensou: Ai no 20,000 Miles

For this project, I was technically a TLC for Gango's existing sub, which archivisth described as "When I started editing, I found that the script had a lot of 3-liners and, even to my untrained ears, sounded off in places."  Now, the thing is... With some crappy projects that I TLC for Orphan, I end up rewriting the script from ground-up. So far, it happened for all but one of them. At any rate, such cases usually lead to me writing garrulous journals of my misadventures, one of which you're holding in your hands right now.  Yes, Marty actually spent a year editing this clusterfuck, so I even have a lengthy description for it.  The funniest part is that Collectr himself ended up not getting involved at all.  • "LOVE UNDER 20,000 LEAGUES" - original TL made me laugh my ass off. But he wasn't actually the first person in the world to assume "20,000 LEAGUES" refers to depth, which would be 116,000km or 1/3 of the way to the Moon.  • I signed up t

Koume-chan ga Iku!! / Here Comes Koume / 小梅ちゃんが行く!! TV (1999) [DVD]

Image
Raws are from this release .  Subs for episode 1 are by DOMO, translation checked by me and quality checked by WOWmd.  Subs for 2-12 are by loadtup, quality checked and retimed by me and WOWmd.  Both projects were in a pretty bad shape before: DOMO is essentially rebranded ARR (but at least he wasn't the translator himself this time) and loadtup's timings are all over the place, plus he's just chronically allergic to periods and onscreen signs (although I suspect he owes that to the dumb structure of his site), but to be fair his translations are accurate at least. Then again, the MC herself is speaking the thickest brand of Kansai-ben, so I couldn't TLC it myself even if I wanted to. Previously existing subs and raws, quality checked and put together, is all.  Extremely low effort release. It's as though I wanted to watch it myself and decided to give it a symbolic cleanup while I'm on it, plus some primitive typesetting. WOWmd also agreed to look at it later.

Nijuushi no Hitomi / Twelve Sets of Eyes TV special (1980) [LD + 16mm film scan] w/ Orphan

Image
This is actually a double release. The main one by [Orphan] can be found here . The one I released under my own tag is 16 mm film scan, captured by Kineko Video and provided by MartyMcFlies.  The subs (retimed by me) are the same as in  [Orphan]  release of the LD version of the show, albeit with simplified typesetting because the image is a lot more jittery and this is meant to be a "side" release, a weird alternative for those few who could actually prefer this over the "main" LD version, because oh boy, this film had seen better days. The video is rife with film aging artifacts, most notably the weird blue flickering. Still, I think it deserves to be released because even with all the artifacts it looks considerably crispier than the LD and comes in genuine 1080p. Video is AVC, audio is PCM. TL notes:  The nickname children give to Ooishi - "Koishi-sensei" - is a parody of her name: Ooishi (大石) means "big stone" while Koishi (小石) means "s

[Orphan] Michite Kuru Toki no Mukou ni / Across the Surging Times (1991)

Image
I've actually been wanting to do this movie ever since I first learned about it years ago.  When the first ever proper raw for it by Orphan appeared in May this year, I was pleased to discover that I was not alone in that.  The premises and posters are simply fascinating.  While the source book, Paradise by Suzuki Kouji, won a local award in 1991, it's not really quite as great, as its novelty qualities wear out rather soon, unlike the movie's. Still, I've read a good portion of it just to ensure that I don't miss anything while translating.  Nyaa | Collectr's post | DDL | Subs only | AniDB

Rainbow Across the Pacific Ocean / Taiheiyou ni Kakeru Niji / 太平洋にかける虹 OVA (1992)

Image
This one has been in the backlog since December 2023, but now I've finally run out of patience with Ziusudra's QC and Shanghaied someone else into it.  RAWs: Unknown (more on that later)  Translation: Perevodildo  Quality Checking: True Noobow Gamer The video is what we concluded to be an HDTV rebroadcast recording, since there are no traces of a DVD/LD for this show. But even if it was aired in HD, it's safe to say that at least two layers of compression it's been through downscaled it back to 480p. How did it happen? Well, I found it on a certain streaming site. When I asked the uploader for the source, it turned out that he also snatched it from some Japanese guy's YouTube channel. As of December 2023, said channel was already terminated, so the trail goes cold there, and I had to settle for this video from VK. Still, even under two layers of compression, it blows previously available ARR's raws out of the Pacific Ocean. Kudos to Psychomorphosis for preservin

Ore no Sora / My skies (1992) [joint w/ orphan]

Image
Surprisingly, I did this translation back in June 2022 (!) when I still had the energy and motivation so here's the old school verbose description for your enjoyment:  With a half-done script laying around, I heard the call of my skies when Orphan released a good VHS rip as part of their "Cleaning the attics" event. The fact is almost mind-blowing that I grew up on their releases, and now I play a role in one myself.  Update: this sub was in the works for so long that WOWmd had since then acquired a captured an LD for it. Considering, the eponymous prequel to the source manga is currently being translated by Hokuto no Gun, you'd rather expect them to translate this OVA as well. Yet as it appears, HnG is still far from completing even the prequel manga, so it befell upon me to deliver this one. Because I'm such a big dingus, I only figured I should try looking for the raw manga towards the end of ep 1, so with its acquisition, I had to review the whole episode once

In an unexpected turn of events, Peter actually finished checking the rest of the series within the last month.  I'm credited with TLCing it, but considering the fact I changed over half the lines in every episode, you'd effectively be watching my translation.  Honestly, Peter himself (the leader of SWS) doesn't seem a bad guy, his contribution to my TLC has been universally wholesome. It seems to me he was just misled by the crew of fraudsters, which is probably the rest of SWS.  Was it really that bad?  Yes, it was. The original translation, made through some anal wizardry with Spanish subs as a basis, was terrible in every conceivable sense. I have no clue who are or what is wrong with the people (4 of them, apparently), who worked on these subs before me and unironically went ahead with it, saying to themselves, "Yeah, this looks good enough."  I mostly regret giving the SWS credibility with this release, as after this people would probably be thinking, "

Magical Taruruuto-kun Movie 1 (1991)

Nyaa |  TL notes  |  Github  |  DDL   Trailer from VHS:  First movie of Magical Taruruuto-kun, released on 09.03.1991 (between episodes 25&26 of the main TV series). Doesn’t have any own name, just goes by “Taruruuto-kun Movie.” Legend: A user named Avery1 approached me with the sub for this movie not very recently, which came highly in handy, as it begot a rare occasion when everyone in our staff unequivocally agreed on something, more precisely - this movie being a painfully mid and irritating DB-like brainless action for brats. (With the benefit of hindsight, as soon as I finished writing this description, I went to check something on the Japanese wiki just to discover that it was co-screened with one of them Dragon Ball Z movies “Super Saiyan Son Goku.”) We also agreed that the neat visuals are probably its only redeeming quality. Their credits read: “Original Portuguese Translation: Armagedonfansubs; English Translation: Cavery210 of Saiko no Fansub.” Make of that what you wi

Once again, using a new capture by WOWmd, but this time also with Collectr's massive typesetting work. The video has in the end an advert of some children’s show. I didn’t see any reason to cut it out. But I hope you understand why it’s not subbed. Mellow OVA (Joint with Orphan)

Another OVA in my mini-series "Femboycember" that I made up in my head. A follow-up to the fabulous Okama Hakusho, from the same director.  I bothered to jot down some TL notes for this one:  Although I did Okama Hakusho a whole year ago, and I am way more experienced now, translating this OVA felt somehow more difficult and suffocating. It's nowhere near as fun, bold and unhinged as Okama Hakusho. To be fair, this quality of being "fun, bold and unhinged" is apparently what everyone involved ended up renouncing and disowning OH for, which I find entirely unfair - it's probably one of the funniest things I've ever translated. That may have something to do with Austin Powers being the linchpin of my cultural development during puberty, though.  This OVA is also full of inconsistencies. Like the student maligning a stomachache to go look at PE teacher's breast through the shirt, yet turning his eyes away when another hot teacher flashes her pants befor

Hotaru Kagayaku {joint with WoWmD and Glenn}

Image
Get it on nyaa.  Dedicated to Daisaku Ikeda. Based on Glenn's fansub from 2018. WOWmd recently acquired and captured a new VHS which was considerably less garbage than previous rip from ARR. This even absolutely could not have avoided me, a Daisaku Ikeda nerd, so after receiving Glenn's consent, I embarked on the quest of retiming and refining this sub. Notice how I didn't say unfucking because Glenn's script was decent enough as it is, with only half of the lines being unsatisfactory for me. That is not to say it didn't have some pretty factual slip-ups, like Russians invading Manchukuo in 1942, which Glenn already pointed out himself.  DDL  | Subs only | AniDB

Okama Hakusho (joint w/ Orphan)

Get it on nyaa.   Collectr's post  which basically sums it up so that I have nothing more to add, even though I enjoyed working on this.  No, there actually is an interesting detail. This OVA contains a mention of some kissaten/coffee shop called "Doramu" which we'd probably never figure out if not for my previous experience of subbing Pachislo Kizoku Gin, where there was also a kissaten named Doramu, but at least they bothered to spell it out in kanji (though, it still doesn't make much sense): 銅羅夢. I don't know if it's some homage or a tradition in anime production, but the trend is definitely there. After all, Once is chance, twice is coincidence, three times is a pattern. Ningen Kakumei - Episode 1 release & TL notes

Image
Episode 1 I'm really glad the DVDs WOWmd bought had VobSub on them. I literally wouldn't be able to figure this series out without them - the characters use a whole lot of religious text quotes, which are, may I remind you, from the 13th century or earlier, and consequently use deprecated pronunciations, kanji combinations, and the meanings more obscure than the muttering of a doting grandpa, which I had to look up... at Soka Gakkai's official web sites for interpreting Nichiren's writings! The context is also enormously complex. Being a complete layman in Buddhism, I often find myself in a recursion, when looking up some concept I need to understand to properly translate the line, I have to additionally look up two more explanations, each one of which also has in itself some concept I need to look up, etc. This is honestly the slowest I've ever translated an anime, despite having the Japanese CC. Oh, and let's not forget, I also need to furnish this very file y

Collectr's Blog: Inochi no Chikyuu: Dioxin no Natsu

Collectr's Blog: Inochi no Chikyuu: Dioxin no Natsu : Here's another project that has been stuck in limbo for a very long time: the 2001 movie Inochi no Chikyuu: Dioxin no Natsu ( Life on E...  Nothing much to add on this one. Felt peculiar translation-checking the script after another Russian team for the first time. Surprisingly, though, it wasn't half-bad. Gotta go pay them tribute someday. Alas, as far as I know, the team was disbanded around 2013 or so.  Another funny story is that this movie was an absolute slog for NorainuG when he tried to TLC it, for some reason. I didn't find neither the movie completely awful nor the translation completely hopeless and so was done with it in 4 days or so. That said, though, it's another concentrated midness so I wouldn't try to shill it as something worth your time.  Nyaa | Subs only | DDL

Baribari Densetsu OVA + Movie [Final]

Image
Nyaa | DDL  (movie only) | Subs only  |  AniDB   Originally conceived as an excuse to make a nyaa shitpost using a funny group tag, this project soon deteriorated into something nobody saw coming, and half of the people contributing their names' first letters to said funny tag never showed up. But I won't get ahead of my first entry in the detailed journal of events leading to that:  Baribari brought up in the suggestions channel. Some jump on-board for the fun of it, including some who are made to. Trying to sneak my way into the [DILDOs] tag as well.  Spent 30 minutes explaining to Marty why the OVA needs to be done first. Marty finally gets his VHS delivered and captured. Here goes nothing.  Character from Kansai makes an appearance. Playing Russian roulette after every line. Also, man, this girl is literally TougeWolf. My head hurts, but at least it's over and not my problem anymore. The next day, an SDBD with both the OVAs and the Movie on it are announced, although a

Genji Part 1 (for Orphan)

Image
Here's the original  Collectr's blog post about Genji Part 1 . My favorite part is  You still following this? I lost the thread a long time ago.  This makes for my first completed joint project with Orphan. Almost unbelievable how I was literally brought up on their subs, with Kasei Yakyoku being one of my first ever translations from English, and now I'm returning the favor with my own hands. What a time to be alive.  The show is a clusterfuck indeed, here's my version of the guide to characters that no one but me ever gonna read:  "Heike (平家) refers to the Taira (平), hei being the on'yomi reading of the first kanji and "ke" (家) means family. Note that in the title of the Genpei War, "hei" is in this combination read as "pei" and the "gen" (源) is the first kanji used in the Minamoto (also known as "Genji" which is also pronounced using on'yomi, for example as in The Tale of Genji) clan's name." so
