An RF-4B Phantom II stationed in Japan crashed into a residential area in Yokohama in 1977, resulting in 3 fatalities and 6 injuries. That seemingly unremarkable incident that would hardly otherwise be seen as anything more than a 6-minute long youtube disaster documentary material, spawned a picture book in 1979, this movie in 1984, and finally, a statue erected on the site in 1985. Without trying to sound disrespectful to the victims, I’ve seen rowdy drinking incidents that were both more dramatic and deadly than this, yet never went out of their way to make you waste an hour of your time watching the victims live their painfully mundane lives, completely devoid of any features or events that’d make spending your time with them any justifiable, only to show you the disaster in question in the last 10 minutes. This show is like Natsufuku no Shoujo-tachi done wrong in every aspect. Leaving aside the cynicism of the US military who made no attempt at helping the victims and took no responsibility for the crash and civilian deaths on the foreign soil, it’s just one of the many tragedies that always follow in the wake of keeping active military, and I have no doubt that if it somehow happened that a Japanese military plane crashed on an American home, killing the whole family, the Japanese government would resort to the exact same tactics and sweep it under the rug. Maybe I just need to believe in the old “One death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic” to be moved by this work, but right now I lack the hypocrisy to pretend that I do find its manipulative tricks believable for one second. It’s a cynical cashgrab, guising as an anti-war movie.
If that wasn’t enough, the characters are also depicted in the most obscenely annoying way as far as the infants go, both visually and verbally. It’s easier to form any emotional attachment with Kaori, whom the others happen to foil, than with the boys who actually ended up dying in the accident, or their mother.

The mastering on this DVD is not the best, and the audio is horrendously noisy; the movie even starts with a disclaimer, apologizing for the distorted video due to the film rot.
When Shinpachi offers Kaori a signed photo of some idol, it’s the photo of Momoe Yamaguchi.
