Emperor Meiji and the Great Russo-Japanese War / Meiji Tennô to Nichiro Daisenso / 明治天皇と日露大戦争 Movie (1957) [372p AVC AAC]

Translation Perevodildo Editing Paul Geromini darkcart The project started when Paul found some alleged DVD rip for this on Avistaz. The encoding leaves more questions than answers: why is it 716x372? Why is it forced to display in 2.25:1? Why is it 30 fps? Why is audio AAC? There’s an alternative DVD encode on Rutracker, but it’s even crustier. Needless to say, it was never released on BD or in any form in HD, and it probably never will. It’s a pretty good looking (for 1957) color film, though of course it couldn’t match the scale of “The Bridge over the River Kwai” or “War and Peace” which came out the same year, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it—the whole of this movie is about as good as one episode of Animentary Ketsudan. We’re merely doing our small preservationist part here. Unexpectedly, I found some Japanese subtitles for it on  opensubtitles.com , uploaded in the summer of '25. I’m not sure what’s the deal with those. They are not straight-up whisper transcripts, because ...

Isewan Taifuu Monogatari / The Story of Ise Bay Typhoon / 伊勢湾台風物語 Movie (1989) [VHS AVC AAC]

This is a special one. The movie itself is quite good and essentially “Papa Mama Bye Bye” done right. It’s one of the better documentaries we’ve done. But it’s also why the show itself is quite technical in nature and requires a degree of knowledge about Japan’s geography to keep you engaged while the countless events, occurring in various parts of the country, are hurled at you just to leave no impact because they’re but an empty sound to someone unfamiliar with the area. For that reason, the notorious “TL notes” here go beyond what you’d usually expect to help you understand the geography of events. Still, if you think yourself above that and just want to experience it “as-is,”  there’s an alternative, “Noteless” subtitles track. Now comes the sad part. The current rip is eye cancer-inducing, the video is a 374p reencode of a youtube upload of someone’s horrendous rip of their VHS recording of the movie, made while it aired on TV Tokyo (yep, not even a rip of the retail tape, whi...

Ochame na Futago: Clare Gakuin Monogatari - 01 TV (1991) [TVRip AVC AAC]

Yep. Rescuing another mid.  I promise these two will scissor after episode 146. Episodes: I hate St. Clare’s! {クレア学院って大嫌い} Video is taken from that recording of the 2013 rerun of this show. That rerun is the only source of Japanese audio we have for this show—it was never reissued on DVD, let alone better home media—and that audio, all things considered, is pretty shitty: muffled and all, but it is what it is. The video is not great either. A viable alternative would’ve been taking the video from the German DVD of the show (ripped on U2), or one of the other European releases, but that would require someone to encode, then color correct, THEN sync the audio for it, provided, the video itself is not re-edited in the first place, and that is simply out of the realm of possibility for a mid forgotten show like this one. Yes, for all its perceived yuri potential, this show isn’t worth Futari no Lotte’s toe. Usually, “Ochame na Futago” would mean “playful / mischievous tw...
