- Gautaman: The Birth {ゴータマン誕生篇}
- The Final Battle of Love And Sorrow! {愛と悲しみのファイナルバトル} (aka Gootaman R)
So, here’s Gootaman. As proxyman put it,
It’s a Kekko Kamen-esque series with a LOT of reference/cameos to stuff that would only be possible in the 80s/90s. The DVD version censored out text/voiced names and the second episode DVD was done by Five Ways, who edited in “new” footage as a SEX UP release. I bought the laserdiscs, which are uncut and don’t censor any text/names.
and that’s how we ended up doing a new release with LD as the source. Wowmd agreed that the show looked batshit crazy just enough to be enjoyable and encoded proxy’s LD. Having seen parts of the DVD footage, I really do have to wonder what they were cooking with it - most of the censored parts are related to the school facilities, so did they actually just try to retcon the characters into being adults like the licensors did with St. Michaela II where they changed all the “children” into “young adults”? Lol. Did someone involved in transferring it to DVD seriously just stopped and said, “No. This is too offinsive. This is where we draw the line” at some point… for THIS show?
I also looked at the existing… PGS??? ancient fansubs by #anime-classic, in turn “based on the VHS subtitle by Otaking Studios”, and figured a retranslation would be easier than OCRing these subtitles of unfortunate fate that weren’t even good in the first place.
Once again, this release comes with two English subtitle tracks, one with TL notes, explaining all the references and puns, and one without, titled [noteless], selected by default. By the way, the titular “Gootaman” is a calque of Devilman, with “devil” part switched for “Gauta[ma]”, and means “buddha’s warrior.”
