TL Notes:
“The New Woman” term Benio and her peers often use in the series is a calque of the English term. I didn’t think this TL note was necessary until one of our staffers got confused about it.
Episode 12:
Aren’t you just saying that to mock my Satsuma origins, and my samurai prowess?!
His reaction to boiled potatoes is this because sweet potato in Japanese is “Satsumaimo” while “Imozamurai” means a rustic samurai.
Episode 14:
Shinobu gets a love letter, signed with “Waki.” Benio comments on that with “Author, seriously!? Even you?” - Waki here is the name of Waki Yamato, the author of Haikara-san source manga.
Episode 15:
I’m sorry, I d-did… Ah… I mean, it slipped…
Originally he says “Sumimasen, boku… Ie, atakushi de…” - the joke is that Ranmaru forgets his current role for a moment, as “boku” is the masculine form of “I / me” while “watashi” is the feminine one.
In any case, wouldn’t it be unpropitious to kill her over a dish like in that ghost story?
Here, Benio refers to the Japanese urban legend of Banchō Sarayashiki - a servant, who was tortured and killed by her master over the loss of a plate.
Episode 17:
Surely, you can’t be serious! That’d be unlawful!
I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.
The original text here is “innen wo tsukerottendesuka? - nani? innen? washi wa Innen chuusa dazo” - “Are you telling us to pick a fight (innen) with him? - What? Innen? I am Colonel Innen.”
Episode 21:
Is he Hikaru Genji or just Narihira?
While Hikaru Genji aka the protagonist of The Tale of Genji is the embodiment of everything outstanding in men, Narihira (who partially inspired Genji himself) is essentially the Japanese word for Casanova. Hence, the comparison to Shinobu.

Not eggs, great-grandchildren!
Eggs = tamago, great-grandchildren = himago.
Afterword:
If that staff lineup looks all over the place, it really is. We could probably tag this release as [Blasphem-Orphan-Inka-Wow-LonelyDildo-GJM-Crash-Darkwispers-R-Sorcery-Coolfanssub-YokohamaDeez-Animeigo-WasteofBlindness-Ranmaru’sBoys Fansubs] if we wanted to. This release would’ve probably still been possible without the guy who runs the “Golden Time Anime” public page commissioning me to translate this show into Russian… In fact, it would probably have happened sooner, minus all the fun suffering we had in the process (something something friends we make along the way). Alas, he did it, and as a consequence, I had to start caring about this show, enough to translation-check it and try to find someone who actually speaks English to fill an editor’s seat, since before that everyone on the team was ESL, and the subs were so bad they’ve literally caused several editors in a row to quit living. It’s not an exaggeration to say I’ve lost count of how many versions of episode 1 we had by now.
Regardless, I regret to inform you that we all made it through, so congratulations to everyone who is still alive, and everyone who believed in us!
